Solar Carving

17 May

On the way to the car from the beach, we spot a man sitting on a bench with some things spread out beside him. As we approach, it is clear that he is an artist with some of his pieces on display as he sits quietly creating- beachside. Using a magnifying glass and driftwood, Brian Chandler creates breathtaking artistic pieces in varying shapes, sizes, and styles. He invited the kids close to him to watch as he directed the small magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays on his current piece. We could see the spark as it traveled gracefully across the surface, leaving a beautiful trail that would create the image. Asking each of the kids’ names, he removed 2 small pieces of driftwood with little images already on them and ‘carved’ their names into them. The pieces have become treasures for the kids. As we drove away from the beach, Sadie said, “I love the amazing art that man makes with the sunshine.” Me too. Thank you, Brian, for chatting with us and sharing your art!

That guy was our neighbor at our old condo complex! I never really got a chance to talk to him, but he was always outside in a lawn chair doing his art. He and his wife/girlfriend had a chihuahua that Kai would go and pet every once in awhile.

What an awesome experience for the kids! . . . someone just sitting there doing what he loves & sharing some of it with them.
What grand adventures you are having!
