Around the House

One of Sadie’s favorite things to do is write shopping lists. So when we discovered we needed a few things to make a friend’s granola bar recipe, she quickly set to work drawing the needed items. Then it was off to the grocery store…

This is how we roll.

There’s just something about walking to the grocery store. It feels earth friendly but it also makes the food seem so much more important. Believe it or not, an hour (or more) journey to the grocery store on foot/in stroller is much more enjoyable for everyone than a 1/2 hour one in the car. We spend time together talking and playing on the way rather than wrestling with car seat buckles and traffic.

Mmmmm- granola bars. Here’s the Parent Clan’s take on the recipe-

Use 4 cups of quick cooking oats to make a mountain in the center of a mixing bowl.

Pour 3/4 cup of molasses over top creating volcanic lava streams.

Plop 3/4 cup of natural peanut butter here and there to make mudslides.

Scatter about 3/4 cup each of raisins, chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts.

Help Mama pour in a smidge of milk (yes Friend, it did turn out to be about 4 tablespoons) to bind it all.

Stir, stir, beg Mama to help you stir.

Spread using a variety of kitchen utensils (finally settling on a spatula) into a 9×11 pan.

Go outside to play and leave Mama to bake them at 325 degrees for 40 minutes then slice them while still warm.

Playing outside entailed playing pretend in the library/record store (found between the bushes and the fence- how do they know what a record store is??), blowing bubbles, coloring on wood scraps with chalk, and…. playing with Emma, of course!

Loving Emma

When we were considering this adventure to CA to care for Emma, a friend of mine (Jenny) said- ‘Think of what a wonderful experience this will be for the kids. They will learn the selflessness and tenderness of caring for a baby.’ I hadn’t even thought of that… And Jenny- you are so right.

These guys LOVE each other. Emma cracks up at Elijah and Sadie and they just think she’s the sweetest little babe. They each have their special tricks to help her when she fusses. And they’ve gotten really good at occupying themselves or helping during her feeding times (which take both Mama’s hands).

Elijah guards sleeping Emma. “Stop Sadie,” he whispers. “Baby Emma fell asleep!”

Sadie gives Emma a cool sponge bath on a hot day.
